A practice test does not teach you anything. The review does. Taking the exam only produces the raw material: a list of questions you got wrong, a smaller list you got right for the wrong reasons, and a set of patterns you cannot see yet. Everything that turns that into points happens afterwards, and it is the step most people rush because it is far less satisfying than watching a new score appear.
The common rule of thumb is to spend at least as long reviewing a full length as you spent taking it, and many high scorers spend closer to double. That sounds absurd until you consider the alternative: burning one of a small number of official exams to generate a number you then ignore. Here is a protocol that fits the time, plus the log that makes patterns visible.
Nobody reviews well for eight straight hours on the same day they sat an eight-hour exam. Do a first pass the next morning while the reasoning is still fresh, then a shorter pattern pass the day after.
Start during the test: tag your confidence
The most useful review data is generated while you are still taking the exam, and it costs you nothing. As you answer, flag every question you are not sure about. When you review, you now have four categories instead of two, and they mean very different things.

Confident-and-wrong questions are worth the most attention, because they will keep costing you points until you find the belief underneath them. Unsure-and-right questions are the ones people skip and then miss on test day, when the coin lands the other way.
Day one: the question-by-question sweep
- 1Go through every wrong answer without looking at the explanation first. Try to solve it again untimed. If you get it now, the problem was timing or pressure, not content, and that is a different fix.
- 2Then read the full explanation, including why each wrong choice is wrong. The distractors are where the test tells you how it thinks.
- 3Write one sentence per miss: what rule or reminder would have gotten this right. If you cannot write that sentence, you have not finished reviewing the question.
- 4Do the same for every unsure-and-right question. These take ten seconds each when it really was a lucky guess and ten minutes when it was not.
- 5Reread the passages you struggled with, especially in CARS and Psych/Soc, and ask what you missed on the first read rather than what the answer was.
If your review note is 'I need to know more biochem', you have not reviewed anything. A real note reads like 'Michaelis constant goes up with a competitive inhibitor, Vmax does not change.' Specific enough to become a flashcard, or it does not count.
Day two: the patterns
This is the pass that actually changes what you do next week, and it is the one almost everyone skips. Stop looking at individual questions and look at the shape of your misses.
- 1Sort your misses by section and by topic. Two misses in a topic is noise. Five is a content problem with a name.
- 2Sort them by error type using the four categories below. If most of your errors are process errors, more content review will not help you.
- 3Check where in each section your misses cluster. A wall of misses in the last fifteen questions is a pacing problem, not a knowledge problem.
- 4Pick exactly two things to change before the next exam. Not eight. Two changes you can actually execute beat a list you abandon.
The error log: four columns, ten seconds a row
An error log only works if it is fast enough that you keep doing it. Skip the elaborate spreadsheet with fourteen fields. Four columns are enough, and the value appears after three or four exams, when the same word starts showing up over and over in the last column.

Four error types cover nearly everything, and each one has a different fix. Miscategorising is the most common mistake here, because calling a reasoning failure a content gap sends you back to a review book you did not need.

Content gaps feel like the scary category, but for most people in the 500s they are the minority of misses. Application and process errors are usually the bigger pile, which is why doing more content review often produces another identical score. How to space your full lengths
Official full lengths are a limited resource, and how you space them decides whether they measure you or teach you. Early in a study block, one every two to three weeks is plenty, because you need time to act on what each one tells you. In the final stretch, tighten to roughly one a week and keep the official exams for the end, when they are the most accurate mirror of where you stand.

Official full lengths are the best score predictor you have and there are not many of them. Taking one in week two to 'see where I am' spends your most accurate exam at the moment it can tell you the least.
Reviewing question sets, not just full lengths
The same protocol scales down to a twenty-question block, and this is where most of your reps actually happen. Answer the set timed, mark your unsure questions, then review every miss and every lucky guess with the same one-sentence rule. How to tell the review is working
- Your confident-and-wrong pile shrinks. Fewer false beliefs is the earliest sign of real progress, and it shows up before the score moves.
- Repeat topics stop repeating. If enzyme kinetics appeared in your log three exams running and then disappears, that is a fixed gap.
- Your error mix shifts. Content gaps falling while process errors stay flat tells you exactly what to work on next.
- You can predict your score before you see it. That means your sense of your own accuracy has calibrated, which is what stops panic-changing answers on test day.
