Three months is the most common MCAT timeline, and it works, provided the weeks have a shape. The version that fails is the one where content review expands to fill ten of the twelve weeks and practice gets whatever is left. The version that works front-loads questions, protects full lengths, and treats the last month as almost pure practice.
The plan below assumes roughly 20 to 30 hours a week, which lands in the 250 to 350 hour range most complete preparations occupy. If that is not your situation, skip to the part-time version further down, which stretches the same structure over five to six months rather than cutting content out of it.
Nobody is admitted for logging 400 hours. The hours matter only as the container for content coverage, practice volume, and review depth. If you are hitting the hours and your practice scores are flat, the mix is wrong, not the total.
The three phases
Every workable MCAT plan has the same three phases, and the only real question is how long each one gets. In a twelve-week plan the balance shifts steadily from content toward practice, and the transition should be gradual rather than a hard switch.

Official full lengths sit in the last five weeks because they are the most accurate predictor you have and you want them where they can actually inform your final preparation. The weekly template
A plan that only exists at the level of weeks collapses on the first busy Tuesday. Give the week a repeating shape so the decision each morning is which topic, not whether to study. CARS improves through steady exposure and not much else, so one or two passages every day belongs in the plan from week one, independent of whatever science block you are on. Skipping it early is the reason many plans end with a lopsided score.
The part-time version
If you are in classes or working, the mistake is trying to compress the same plan into fewer hours. Stretch it instead. The phases and their proportions stay identical; each one simply takes longer, and the same total volume arrives over five to six months at roughly 10 to 15 hours a week.

What to cut when you fall behind
Everyone falls behind. The question is what gets sacrificed, and most people instinctively cut the wrong thing, which is practice and review, because content review feels like the safer use of a short evening.
- 1Cut content breadth first. Skim the low-yield topics rather than dropping a question set.
- 2Never cut the review of practice you already did. Unreviewed questions are wasted hours by definition.
- 3Protect full lengths. Move one if you must, but do not drop it, because it is your only readiness signal.
- 4Keep CARS daily even at ten minutes. Consistency matters more than session length in that section.
- 5Drop the pretty parts of your system. Colour-coded notes and rebuilt schedules are not study.
When to move your test date
Rescheduling is a strategic decision, not an admission of failure, and it is far cheaper than a score you need to retake. A few signals are worth taking seriously.
- Your practice full lengths are more than five points below your target with under three weeks left. Score movement in the final stretch is usually small.
- You have not finished a full content pass by week eight. The last month cannot absorb both new material and full lengths.
- You have taken fewer than two full lengths and the test is a fortnight away. Stamina and pacing are not learnable on test day.
- Life happened. Illness or a family emergency mid-plan is a reason to move, and the calendar has more dates.
